LIVE MUSIC

Hot House West Swing Orchestra

The Hot House West Swing Orchestra is an exciting ensemble whose mission is to create experiences of connectedness and joy through acoustic music.

The band has become a tight-knit community of some of the country’s top-tier jazz musicians, and the friendship and community spirit they share is immediately palpable. Group vocals, audience interaction, masterful improvisation, and a ceaseless swinging pocket keep audiences smiling, laughing, and tapping their feet from the first note to the last.

The State Street Stompers

The State Street Stompers bring the Jazz sounds of 1920s and 1930s to life. we play that old school jazz, the kind now only played in New York, New Orleans, and Chicago, and we bring it to life with a tight driving rhythm, and plenty of charm. Inspired by artists like Fats Waller, Eddie Lang, and the Boswell Sisters, the band plays the kind of swing-era tunes that once filled dance halls, clubs, and restaurants — music made to make you smile.

LATE NIGHT AND COMPETITION DJ's

Diana Gentille (she/her) [DJ Coordinator]
Diana is a Utah native who has been DJing regularly for Salt City Swing for many years (and is our DJ coordinator for SCS). An interest in swing music is what initially attracted her to Lindy Hop, and she hopes that she can inspire a similar appreciation for Jazz in others.

Diana’s goal is to play songs that make it more difficult to sit down than to get up and dance. Some of her favorite artists include Ella Fitzgerald, Jonah Jones, and Kid Ory.

Tom Yi (he/him)

Hey y’all! I’m Tom Yi — a swing dancer and emerging swing DJ passionate about storytelling, connection, and community through the power of jazz. Since moving to New Orleans in 2022, I’ve come to experience jazz not just as a genre, but as a living conversation unfolding in real time. While the city’s abundance of live music means local DJing opportunities are rare, I’ve had the privilege of sharing tunes at major events like the Ultimate Lindy Hop Championship and Lindyfest, as well as weekly dances at Midtown Swing in New York City and Mobtown Ballroom in Baltimore. My sets are known for weaving together crowd favorites with hidden gems, surprising dancers with deeper cuts while keeping the floor alive with energy.

For me, DJing is both service and art — a way to honor the roots of swing while expanding its horizons. I strive to create inclusive, dynamic atmospheres that balance classic big band swing with lesser-played subgenres like bebop, hard bop, and West Coast jazz. I hope to celebrate the joy of jazz and movement while inviting others to discover new rhythms and stories alongside me. I also have a Substack where I reflect on my DJ journey, share tracklists, dig into jazz history, and explore the philosophies that guide my sets.

Andrew Jose (he/him)
Andrew Jose started to DJ in the early 2010s, and since then has been a regular DJ at local venues in Southern California. Currently he is one of the house DJs for Lindygroove, one of LA’s longest running swing dance venues. Andrew has also been brought in to DJ at local, regional, and national events, including Inspiration Weekend, Berkeley Lindy Exchange, Stormy Weather Jazz Festival, and The Great Southwest Lindyfest. As an avid dancer for the past 17 years, Andrew works hard to bring fun, novel, and most importantly swinging tunes to any floor he DJs for.

Blake Morris (he/they)
I found Lindy Hop in 2018 through my existing love of Jazz. Getting into Lindy Hop was a catalyst for a much larger exploration into the music and its history. My favorite genres/sub-genres include, but are not limited to, Swing Jazz, R&B, Bebop, Hard Bop, Hip Hop, Trad Jazz, Soul, House, movie scores, classical. Some of my favorite artists are Count Basie, Cootie Williams, Johnny Hodges, Duke Ellington, Benny Carter, Freddie Green, etc., etc. But, there so many more! I've also really found enjoyment with studio and live recordings from the late 50s to the 70s from artists like Basie and Ellington which give different takes on absolute classics (proceeds to turn on Duke Ellington's In a Mellow Tone from the album Blues in Orbit)

I can often be found DJing at the weekly local Salt City Swing social dances with hopes of making everyone there feel like they need to get up and dance to every song. I have some songs and artists that I play more than others, but I get excited when I find a new to me song that I can't wait to play the next time I DJ.

Taka Yanagita

Taka's been dancing for 18 years and DJ'ed for 17 of them.  Having grown up in a musical family, a large part of his joy in dancing lies in music.  With trad jazz and big band as the basis of his sets, Taka also plays combo jazz, blues, jump blues, traditional R&B, soul, and other contemporary sounds to keep the dance floor energized and fun.

Andre Perov (he/him)
Andre loves different styles of music and has been collecting vinyl and shellac records for a while. He has been DJing at the local SLC swing scene and at the local SLC Argentine tango scene since 2015.
Andre DJ all his sets using shellac or vinyl records with several turntables and styluses designed for proper reproduction of those records. All sets are pure analog without any digital reproduction and intended to create “the feel of those old days” of DJing with vinyl and shellac records. His collection contains hundreds of original shellac recordings of big bands, Jazz and Country Music and even more vinyl records of different styles.
